Though these underwater pyramids we explored in Calatagan are technically called an artificial reef, I have chosen to call them revived reefs as these amazing structures lying at 60 feet /20 meters underwater deserve and earned that respect.
Calatagan is a municipality in Batangas with widespread white sand beaches and several beach resorts offering spectacular view, rich history and current underwater highlights namely the 14 Underwater Pyramids of Calatagan. These man made reefs are spread over 2 hectares with its structure having impressive coral growth in just less than 10 years.
With Calatagan’s abused waters from extensive dynamite and cyanide fishing almost three decades back ,it took toll and heavy damage on one of the country’s largest coral coverage resulting also in fish harvest decline. CAP (Conserve and Protect) Oceans spearheaded the pyramid project with the full support of the recently departed Vicente Madrigal Warns. The formation of a community collaboration to establish an innovative and iconic artificial reef took place as a resilient reminder of the fight against illegal fishing.
Thousands of Dive volunteers, including the supervision of Jessie de los Reyes, helped shape the successful completion of these mad made wonders.
The reefs seems like one structure from upon approach , these colossal structures are coral growth magnet molded blocks(mostly 80kg each block) made of cement fillings mixed with waste corals, sand and bamboo wood.
It was the late Warns who thought of designing the reefs after the Egyptian/Mayan architectural wonders as pyramids have stood the test of time around the world and is much logical to use that structure to stand proud and strong in Calatagan.
In Spite of all the changes it has undergone, Calatagan is still a quiet provincial town with a firm hands-on conservation and respect for their coastal environment. By: Reggie Reyes
